I believe you are quite right about Markham having lived on SI the longest. I was thrilled a couple of years ago to come across an autographed copy of "The Man with the Hoe and Other Poems" in a used book barn in upstate NY.
We shouldn't forget our illustrious more "modern" poets, either. I believe Audre Lorde lived in St. George and in modern poetry circles, Armand Schwerner, a long-time Staten Island resident, is counted among one of the most innovative. Langston Hughes worked on a truck farm on Staten Island, counted among those famous people "just passin' through" I guess. Who knows what the future may bring? Maybe some day a Staten Island poet winning the Pulitzer? a National Book award? Well, can't hurt to dream, right?
