Eureka - Residents of this seaside timber town go to the polls...in a battle over an overgrown, polluted chunk of land that Wal-Mart has targeted as the site for a new mega-store.

Company officials say they're merely hoping for a chance to do business with Eureka's 28,000 residents. Critics contend the chain has bullied its way ..., if it prevails, will steal the town's best hope for the future...

"If you take this land and turn it into a big-box store, you will never get it back."...

The vote... on weather to rezone the 32-acre lot comes after the California Coastal Commission last fall refused to allow it, and after the City Council passed a measure against the change.

But the company was able to bypass local government...Since then, the company has spent $235,000 ...

The battle over the tract also has been marked by a Wal-Mart telephone marketing campaign in which residents were called as many as seven times a day...After getting complaints, Wal-Mart fired the marketing company...
