I'd like to add to Donna's comments although admittedly, I won't be quite as eloquent.

I sincerely doubt that this letter is genuine.
But if it is, on the surface, I could see how it would strike someone as humorous. However, in the big picture, which is what many of us all strive to see during the course of our lives, it is the root of our problems as human beings.

Someone has to be the bigger person, and it seems like there are few who make this effort. The opportunity to make a true impact on the older woman's life was lost, by spite and retaliation.

Why lower yourself to someone else's pettiness? I guess what I am asking is what about the 'cream rises to the top'? Who should be the bigger person?

One more thing and I will step down:

This is a forum for discussion (duh). The opinions expressed here are not indicative of everyone who posts here. You are not required to agree with anyone. But, rather than close your mind (another problem with society) to others opinions, try opening your eyes and stepping beyond yourself. Maybe you will learn something.
