About fifteen years ago I used to have dinner in the same restaurant every night. I had my regular table, halfway between the bar and the bathrooms. One night I decided to take a little survey, so I began stopping the regulars as they passed me, and I said, "Who's the greatest entertainer of the century? Think about that for a couple of minutes and on your way back let me know."
I wrote down the answers on a paper napkin. I've lost the napkin, but I remember approximately what it said:
Sinatra 24 votes
Bob Hope 7 votes
Sammy Davis, Jr. 6 votes
Elvis 6 votes
Enrico Caruso 1 vote (a White House cop from Pittsburgh)
Joan Rivers 1 vote (a waitress)
No votes for Disney, and that surprised me a little.
