In a recent moment of introspection I found an old Staten Island attitude still lodged in my headbone after fifty years.
I live in a small incorporated Maryland city, and Washington, DC is about half a mile down the street from me. It seems very natural to me to think of Washington as "The City," even though I live in a city. When I go into Washington (as I almost never do) I tell people that I'm going into the city.
But I've noticed that NOBODY else I know ever calls it that. Everyone else calls it "The District."
I think I must be doin what comes natural to a Staten Islander.
