THE COAST GUARD reported sighting debris in the waters off Montauk, Long Island, on Saturday, though it could not be determined whether the debris was linked to Kennedy’s plane.

NBC News’ Robert Hager said that Kennedy, a magazine publisher and the only son of the late president, departed Fairfield, N.J., about 8:30 p.m. Friday and was due at Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., about 10 p.m. ET.

The other passengers aboard the plane, Hager reported, were Kennedy’s wife, the former Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister, Lauren. Reports differed on whether a fourth passenger was aboard the plane.

On Friday night, when Kennedy and his party failed to show up at the airport on Martha’s Vineyard, he was reported missing by a driver who had been sent to the airport to retrieve him.

The party was en route to the wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr.’s cousin Rory — the daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

That wedding was postponed; the Kennedy family attended Mass and gathered in the family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass.

Family members gathered on the porch of the house of Rory’s mother, Ethel Kennedy, with about 50 people and three priests praying “for the safety of the loved ones, as well as for Rory and (her fiancé, Mark Bailey),” said family spokesman Brian O’Connor.
