Check out the article by Phil Hilts in today's NY Times. He reviews Jonathan Moreno's book about "Secret State Experiments Using Humans as Research Subjects."
This book refers to the "What you don't know may hurt you" things I referred to in my response to sipoet's posting on "The Mosquito Man."
The nice thing about the book is that someone who never served in the military, and who has been mostly skeptical of government programs, came to my place (Fort Detrick) and was surprised to find out that we are rigorous in doing medical research with the best ethics.
Thanks to my "required" religion and philosophy courses at Wagner College (which were primarily philosophy and ethics courses) I was able to extend the successful ethical research of 1954-1973 into the present day with far more openness than could have been allowed during the cold war.
