My first paying job was in a gas station. Until the early 60's, my great-uncle John owned the Mobil station on the corner of Forest & Jewett. My job for as long as I could remember was to fill the Coke machine.
I remember it so well. It was outside in front, between the office and the garage. It was red (of course) with a curved top. When you opened it up, it had metal cylinders that you put the coke bottles in and I would carefully put a bottle in each one. To reach the top, I had a little ladder that I had to climb up and down with one bottle at a time. It was hard work for a little kid.
My pay? A bottle of coke and a nickle for the candy machine.
