This is the anniversary of the birth of "rock 'n' roll" as a music craze. It was on this day in 1955 that "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets hit number 1 on the Billboard charts. Bill Haley was an unlikely herald for the new music - he didn't invent it...he didn't add anything new to it...and as a pudgy man well past his youth, he didn't exactly exude sex appeal. On the other hand, maybe having a dweeb like him play the new music was just what the music needed to break out of the rhythm 'n' blues mold and become a mass appeal phenomenon.
