Speaking of Prohibition, when I was growing up in Richmondtown, at the intersection of Clark Ave, and Amboy Road there was the ruins of the old Elks Club. We use to play ball there. Rumor had it that in the 20's the members not only consisted of "prominent " Staten Islanders, but also of New York City in general. As such it hosted many a "wet " affair. A few small boats use to leave from the South Shore, go out beyond the two mile limit and receive some of Canada's finest. For some strange reason the Coast Guard never bothered them. My grandfather was rumored to be a member. Strangely he had bought my father a 30 footer. In time when the story was told and I questioned my father he would just wink!
