I've spent the past five or six months trying to climb the family tree, and I just got a look at a page from the 1920 census that lists my eponymous maternal grandfather, Jim Sweeney.
All my life I thought that he owned a grocery store on Cary Avenue. The only picture of him I've ever seen shows him standing in front of the store, next to a horse attached to his delivery wagon.
But in the 1920 census he claims to be a "Sampler" by trade, and he claims to do his sampling for the city government.
Anybody got any ideas about what a NYC Sampler was?
