I agree with all you say, but somehow I just can't bring myself to use those awful ugly :) things, or the "g"s or the "LOL"s. I guess I'm wrong, but it seems to me that if those things were necessary there wouldn't be any humorists. I can't imagine Mark Twain sprinkling them all through his writings. Or does Runyon ever write about "Harry the Horse, Little Isadore, and Spanish John "?
Maybe the answer is to confine oneself to broad humor--taken in any way you like.
