I didn't mean to imply that Mr. Ryan was a bad guy. I recall that he was a good teacher, and usually very friendly.
The one thing I'll remember most about him was that he was very much into mental excercises (this was new to me in the early 70's). before class, he had us memorizing multiplication tables for numbers over 12, and I'll tell you, he had me convinced that I was feeling the stimulated electrons in my brain.
I just attended my 25th Curtis reunion, and I was amazed at how much I had forgotten about those times. Maybe those electrons in my brain were really being fried.
