Back in the second world war Vought and Sikorsky built the experimental V173. A pancake shaped aircraft driven by two props.
This led to a contract for the XF5U-1. It looked like a saucer. By then the war was over so the navy cancelled the contract.
The aircraft I saw in Dallas was the Chance-Vought/LTV XC-142A. It made its first vertical landing on 11 Jan 65. There were 5 built but it never got pass the R&D stage.
