I mostly remember the spraying at the Drive-In theater out by the old airport and Farmer's Market. Every time we went there - the entire audience was doused with clouds of that noxious stuff. I also remember a few summers when the mosquitoes were particularly bad and a guy with a very loud sprayer came down our street. We were shooed inside and all the windows were shut.
Other times our mosquito prevention was citronella candles (such a summer scent) and punks. We would gather armloads of them from the swamps in Sunnyside - near the pump house and dry them until they were ready to burn. Some hardy folks even attempted to smoke them. About the mosquitoes- common lore had them coming from Jersey. ( In the 50's the bad influences were said to be from there- bad drivers, mosquitoes, etc..)
