Thanks for making that correction. I would hate to think the Swedes celebrate Syttende Mai by showing a "black" cross commemorating the end of their control over Norway. That would seem somewhat perverse.

The Vikings (before there was political division into Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland) were described in history as fighting savages. Of course, these histories were written by by the English who were often the defeated warriors in most cases.
I wonder if that status was responsible for the originators of the word and idea of as system of LAWS being regarded as savages. I like to think of my forebears as "creative peace makers" who traveled a lot. After all, the world was better off for our visiting.
