The original "north/south" route was (and is) US Route 1. The northern end starts in Maine and travels down the Massachusetts coast to southern RI and CT. Unlike I95, which cuts over to Jersey at the GW Bridge, Rt 1, continues south through Manhattan via Broadway, cuts over to the west side and goes through the Holland Tunnel to Jersey. It then continues all the way to Key West, FL.
The road from Manhattan to Maine was the original "post road" from colonial days. I assume it was the same going south (with a ferry instead of a tunnel between NY & NJ)-- and as the country expanded to Florida so did the road.
Victory Blvd was not a part of the main travel routes between states.
