Silver Lake in the early to late 70's was a common after dark hangout for teens and college students for drinking, smoking pot, etc. In the summertime, everyone used to go skinny dipping, despite the fact that swimming was prohibited. I once saw someone bring pool floats/tubes.
One reason swimming was prohibited was for safety. There was a tremendous undertow. It seemed like there was at least one drowning every year. I personally knew one high school student that drowned (and no, he wasn't drunk or on drugs).
On a lighter note, the golf course was the best sledding in the area, as described in the earlier Hoftopia Chronicles.
