Not only was your grandmother the victim of a boo-boo but a double whammy to boot. Now that I read your post, it reminded me of what I had read long ago about the immigrants first coming over to America. As you mentioned, because of the language barriers and/or accents involved, the names were quite often "Americanized", (which is really a polite way of saying they were ~changed~) but it was usually the LAST names that were tampered with.
Just recently, much to my horror, my husband looked back at our daughters Birth Certificate as he was going through papers and he happened to notice that for the time of birth AM was checked off instead of PM. You'd think they'd be more careful with Vital Records like that.
