Samuel Langhorne Clemens' pen name was Mark Twain which was derived from his work as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. The call, 'Mark Twain' would indicate the depth of the water; two fathoms (12 feet).
I learned this in school many years ago and for some reason it has stayed with me all these years. I guess, some bits of information do come in handy if only once in a while!
