You all think you had it bad, my first military assignment was at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama and the first upper classmen that I met were named Clay and Calhoun. Incidentally, I was the only Damnyankee (one word) in the group and the only cadet from above the Mason Dixon Line. My S.I. accent (1941) when compared to the true Brooklyneese or Manhattan accent kept me relatively unharmed until they found out that S.I. was indeed a part of N.Y.
I survived the hazing and found out that southerners were not too bad.
