My Dad landed at Omaha on DDay. He told me many stories about it, mostly when a little drunk. The scenes in Pvt Ryan were what he told me about. I also visited there when I was serving in the Navy in the 80's and 90's.
I learned something there that has stuck with me forever, or at least to this day: I am unable to visit military shrines, memorials or anything of the sort. I have to leave. I tried... the Vietnam Wall.... couldn't even get close. The traveling wall... drove by it... saw it from a quarter mile away- close enough. They dedicated a memorial in Saipan in 1995, haven't seen it... I can tell you where it is and walk you up close to it... but that's all.
I don't break down and cry or anything, I don't stand and shiver... just can't get close to them.
I have no idea why this is, anyone have any ideas?
