Speaking of hitch-hiking. As a kid around 1952-53, I lived in New Dorp and hung out in Great Kills. I hitch-hiked Amboy Road between the two countless times. Later in the Navy, during 1958 - 60, I hitch-hiked twice a month from Brunswick, Maine to the 180th St Ind. station (near GW bridge), then I'd take the subway to the ferry, changing trains somewhere. Then back again. Although I have some interesting tales, never had anything dangerous happen. I would not think of doing that today.
