Syttende Mai Arthur Anderson Art artnscience-(at)-yahoo.com
One of the populations of dandelion seeds that took root in fair StatNisland were the folks of my roots, the Norwegians. Wednesday is Syttende Mai (17th of May) or Norwegian Constitution Day. I especially like to celebrate this day because independence from Sweden in 1905 followed a bloodless coup that my great great grandfather Johan (Hans) Olsen participated in when he was a member of the Storting (Norwegian Parliament). He was also an Admiral in the Navy and made sure that the Scaggerak was filled with gun boats and sailors ready to support the day of independence. Because the coup was bloodless, Norwegians celebrate it by watching their children march in the streets waving flags and wearing traditional costumes.
We also sing the Norwegian National Anthem on this day. Here is a link to the lyrics. http://www.geocities.com/artnscience/syt-1.html
