JR -- I have read three sources that confirm what I have read about the Staten Island women. The source that I cited was a letter from a British military officer, not a woman who was victimized. Of course, this behavior was not confined to Staten Island; the women of New Jersey suffered as well. Staten Island was a loyalist stronghold, but that didn't seem to matter. The situation in the colonies with the British troops became problematic for the British after a while because it stirred up resentment even among their supporters. This, according to one history that I read, eventually led to the immigration of prostitutes to the colonies. These women were virtually slaves.
