BSC SI Shipyard John Ritter JR ritter@interserf.net I spent time in the early 60's in the Brooklyn and Phlidelphia Navy Yards and there were career civil service ladies still working there that started during the war. These yards became inefficient after the war and many of them are closed. This is also true in the commercial shipyards on both coasts as they, and or merchant marine cannot compete with foreign shipyards or steamship company's.

The following book tells alot more about these ships. I made two cruises as a reserve while still in High School aboard one of these ships. Went to Halifax, Nova Scotia on one trip. The other was to Bermuda during the Easter break when they had the big fire on the island.
