My (tongue-in-cheek)take on it is that we had had one mega-giant whose stuff generally worked OK if you could figure it out and help files that were near useless because they always addressed different problems than what you had or assumed you knew more than you did. Other parties stuff would or would not work with the same inherent difficulties as Microsoft's own stuff.
Now we will have two kilo-giants whose stuff will generally work OK if you can figure it out and help files that will be near useless because they'll always address different problems than what you have or assume you know more than you do. Other parties stuff will or will not work with the same inherent difficulties as Microsoft1's or Microsoft2's own stuff.
This shall be called Progress. So let it be written, so let it be done.
Also lest we forget, despite all that's been said and done. Whether he did it fairly or by screwing a few along the way, it really was Bill Gates who dragged us kicking and screaming into the information age.
