The Island to me was a safe place as a kid. I could go from Tottenville to Travis, St. George to Mariners Harbor with out any problems as a teenager. I some respects this was the state of the times, i.e. late 50's and also the state of the community. I feel it built self assurance and the ability to negotiate new soroundings. When I first got to Europe going from Naples to Rome or Florance on the train wasn't a big deal. Things have sure changed since then!
