Yeah, but the aroma from the percolator's coffee brewing more than made up for the mess it could sometimes make. If one had a gas stove, one could adjust the flame so that you could just see the brewed coffee bubbles hitting the glass bulb on top. This was more luck than skill, and a real pro (like my father) could set it just right.
Of course, with an electric stove forget it!
