"Big Week - The week of February 20 to 26 was called Big Week by the Air Force. I never heard it called that at any briefing. The purpose of our missions for this week was to destroy as many German aircraft as possible, both in the air, on the ground or in production. The more planes we destroyed, the fewer would be available to attack us on future missions. This was the beginning of the battle of attrition & an effort to gain air superiority. U.S. aircraft production would go up while German production decreased at least temporarily. Another consideration was that our Air Force, through its vast training program was able to replace both lost aircraft & crews while the German training program could not. During this week the mission became noticeably more dangerous & we became more apprehensive about where our missions would take us & our chances for survival. It appears the Germans had another title for our operation. At least one newspaper referred to it as the 'Week of the White Death' reporting that over 114 American airman were shot down during the week & landed in very remote areas of the Alps & were unable to be rescued." ...
