women - woman Margie Stephens Margie drsmrs@earthlink.net I'm a firm believer in commas. Had a grand time hassling an assistant professor of English at Stanford about some things in his publish or perish paper. He'd write things like "... black and white, blue, green and red, purple and orange."

Now does he mean one is black and white
another blue
a third green and red
and the fourth purple and orange

*OR*

is one black and white
another blue
a third green and red
a fourth purple
and the fifth orange?

How many items? Four or five? Without commas, it's not clear.

He'd never lower himself to change anything while I was there, though I did wonder if he sometimes took my advice. He once admitted, "You have a good ear for grammar." Coming from this guy, that was high praise.

Margie who earns $$ tutoring English
