Comma in or comma out? C Connelly mcgil mmmg@netscape.net Then there is the question of the comma.

In grammar and high school I was taught that in a string of words there is always a comma before the "and." As in:

Timmy, Lassie, and Spot went for a walk.

In college I was taught that you didn't put a comma after the "and." As in:

Timmy, Lassie and Spot went for a walk.

Then last year, I went back to finish Grad School and I was told the comma should be put in. As in:

Timmy, Lassie, and Spot went for a walk.

Believe it or not, this turned into a major debate -- comma in or comma out? We consulted quite a few punctuation reference books and they were just about equally divided on the issue. We decided to compromise, as long as the writer was consistent, comma's in or comma's out through out the entire document, it would be accepted as correct.
