I will usually brown the meatballs first (made with both beef and pork) and then add to the sauce. Also add some sweet Italian sausage, brown it up and slice into 1" pieces and add that in too. My grandma taught me how to do that. She was Norwegian but knew how to cook. I also can make a stuffed cabbage that would knock your socks off, that my grandma also made. It involves actually stuffing an entire cabbage. Nobody who has had it my way has ever wanted those skinny little cabbage rolls again!
