Honestly, it's a huge stall tactic used by companies, my employer included.
Call center profits and so forth are based on several numbers... one of which is how long it takes for someone to pick up a phone...
So if they have a computer answer the phone, the better for them..
What's worse is that when you push the wrong button, you talk to someone who can't help you except to put you back into the call queue and make you hold some more!!
From personal hell, don't ever try to call AT&T wireless service. They are really good at bouncing you around. My record time on hold with them was 3 hours. Needless to say I closed my wireless account with them and went to Sprint!!!!
I say push ZERO!!! I am all for that!!!
