In the early 1940s there was a grocery-deli on Cary Avenue, about a quarter of the way between North Burgher and Broadway. I think this place was once owned by my grandfather, but that's not relevant here. In 1940 it was operated by a man called Abe Barland, and the store itself was known as The Red Store.
On that same block, down on the corner of Broadway and directly opposite Duke Fraser's bar, was a fountain-newsstand kind of place operated by Abe Fendrich. This was known as The Blue Store.
I never knew why those stores were called The Red Store and The Blue Store. Does anybody know? They weren't red and blue.
