That's pretty amazing to learn that there's a group of Hoffman Island Island alums. I'd thought it was dead and forgotten, but now it has a web-site of radio operators from the war.
One of those swimmers has another item of historical importance to relate.
You know that tall brick smokestack on Hoffman Island? It has an entry port at the bottom. And rusty iron rungs inside all in a row up to the top. You can climb it hand over hand, if you're totally nuts, as it goes up a mile.
Guy I know climbed it.
