Other countries have Thanksgiving too, but it's held on other days. Canada's Thanksgiving is held the 2nd Monday in October and coincides with our Columbus Day.
From what I've been told, it's held in October because their climate is colder and their harvest earlier.
I heard stories of being raggamuffins from both of my parents. My Dad would have been the same age as yours but grew up and did his raggamuffin thing in West Brighton. My Mom was about thirteen years younger, and did hers in Westerleigh. So it was going on in your Dad's time, but maybe not on the south shore.
