Best taters I ever ate were those blackened ones right out of the fire. Many fond memories of raking leaves in the fall and burning them. I can still smell the acrid smoke. Also remember collecting Christmas trees, stacking them in an open lot and then burning them.
After a tour in the Navy and some bouncing around I bought a house in Laurel, Maryland. When the fall came my very young children and I raked the leaves into piles as I did as a child growing up in Grant City. I lit the leaves telling the kids how my father and I had done so many years before. Suddenly I heard a siren and up drove a fire truck. My small leaf fire was quickly extinguished and I was given a warning ticket. So much for trying to pass on family traditions. Being a fast learner I never mentioned collecting Christmas trees for even bigger fires.
