How about "box or punch" ball? You marked off the bases in a square on the street. The field was about 20 feet on each side. The ball was pitched on a bounce to the "batter" who had to hit it with his hand or fist and then beat the hit down the line. The tricky part was that you couldn't hit it beyond the field on a fly(an out), so all hits were grounders.

With a lively Spaulding, it was a challenge to field a hot grounder at such a close range and then throw the runner out before he got to first base.
