I haven't been back to Hawthorne Avenue since the early thirties. T he new houses that were built than I am told were all torn down. I presume that my Mother named the street and as she was a proponent of the arts, It must have been named for Nathaniel Hawthorne. (Supposition). The one big memory of that time, a local gangster was shot by the local Mafia in front of my house from a limousine in full view of all of us playing cowboys and Indians on the street. Because of the big depression, dad could not sell most of the houses and the banks took over and we moved backed to West New Bright on.
Watchogue Road I believe ran perpendicular to Hawthorne Avenue
