When I was a kid, they used to fire a loud gun over the reservoir 3 times a day. This was supposed to scare the seagulls off the lake and thus stop them from defecating too much in SI's drinking water.
The birds were used to it, and would fly across the street and roost on the 8th fairway of the golf course. If one was golfing in the late afternoon, the glare from the setting sun reflecting off the white seagull feathers made it a daunting task to find one's golfball among the feathers!
