The Gustave Mayer house was built in 1857. Mr. Mayer, a native of Germany was a confection maker who moved his family into the house in the early 1900s. His daughters Paula and Emily occupied the house until the late 1980s. Paula was an artist and Emily was a schoolteacher who taught my grandfather in the early part of the century. The Italianate style villa achieved landmark status in 1989 and is currently occupied by a family who is restoring the house from the inside out.
