1. Judy was the chimp who lived at the zoo for many years. She was shipped off to the Guadalajara Zoo in Mexico when they got rid of all of the large mammals and rebuilt the mammal and bird wings as habitat exhibits.

2. The zoo started out as a live animal exhibit at the Staten Island Museum in St. George in the 1920s and 1930s. After the zoo was built in 1936, all of the live animals (mostly reptiles and amphibians) were transferred over, along with the museum's curator, Carroll Stryker, who became the new zoo's director.

3. The zoo was known for having the most complete rattlesnake collection in the United States ( maybe the world ?). They had every species and subspecies of rattlenske found in the U.S., plus some from Mexico and South America. This, unfortunately, is no longer true. This fine collection was built mostly through the efforts of Carl Kauffeld, curator of reptiles and director of the zoo.

4. The zoo was built by the WPA in the mid 1930s.

5. The souvenir shop and snack counter was the central feature of the old aquarium.

6. Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM was feeding time for the snakes.
