SubTitle: Clove Lakes Park
Posted by: Ed Johnson (CicadaMan1@aol.com) on 8/22/1997@00:57hrs:
I grew up 1/2 block from Clove Lakes Park, and spent a good part of my youth roaming around there. I still spend quite a bit of time in the park, mostly bird-watching. A few questions, with a natural history bent:
1. Not far from the ice-skating rink, there is a rare tree, a species of hybrid oak. The only other place on Staten Island that this particular type of tree is found is in Tottenville. Who planted it ? Extra credit: when was it planted ?
2. In the same general area is a spot which, as kids, we knew as the "Indian Caves". What are the Indian Caves, and were they really made by Indians ?
3. What catastrophic event, which resulted in one human death, occurred in the park in 1926 ? Hint: it was of natural origin.
If you are out there, Carlton Beil, no fair answering, these would be too easy for you.
