Anybody remember when Axel Stordahl opened that record store on Richmond Avenue? I thought about that this morning when I heard that Frank was gone. He was there for the store's grand opening, I think. When I was in high school ('48-'52) I started on 84th Street, but I did the last three years in D.C. I used to ride three buses home to what was in those days the far Maryland suburbs, and once in a while when I came to a transfer point, I would just decide to hang around in downtown Washington for an hour or so. There was an old guy there selling newspapers, and every day he would try to hawk his papers by shouting "Extra! Frank Sinatra dies!"

The first time I heard it I was taken in by it, and the next morning, riding to school with my uncle's car pool, I searched the Post for it but couldn't find it. So I mentioned it, and a man in the car said: "Where did you hear that? At 15th & K Streets?" Apparently the old fellow had been using that same line long enough to have become pretty famous for it.

And that was nearly fifty years ago. And Sinatra didn't die until yesterday. Remarkable life. Joel Siegel said this morning: He's been a part of all of our lives for all of our lives. The two times we needed him most were when we were falling in love and when we weren't falling in love.
