I Remember Ralston Stores

I remember the Ralston Store that was at the bus stop on Jewett near the Westerleigh Savings and loan. On the way to PS30 we would go in and buy a day's supply of penny candy from the big glass jugs. At lunch time you could walk up there with your buddies and buy a baloney sandwich (on a French Baguette) with mustard and drink an orange soda. That baloney sandwich and orange soda was the best taste I can remember. The operator of the store would always give us a slice of baloney while my mother was shopping for supplies. The cereals and stuff were so far up on shelves that the operator had to use one of those gripper things on a long pole to get the cereal down. They had a little butcher shop on the right side of the store. I would like to watch the butcher prepare meats. Once, I asked him for the legs and feet of a chicken. I took it home and figured out that the tendons would make the digits move. I tied strings to each one and attached a lable. Then, after some practice I could make the digits do anything I wanted including a few jestures that were banned at home. The next day I brought my prize to school for show and tell. Ralston's was a "National Resource" for me. It made me sad when the success of the A&P caused it to shut down. Thanks Marcene for mentioning Ralstons Markets so these memories came back.
