Farming & a:_____________ were the simple occupations of colonial times on Staten Island. In 1948 there were still 35 farms on the Island, mostly engaged in truck farming, proximity to the vast metropolitan markets making this activity very profitable.
The many sea Captains who had homes in b:_____________County well into the 20th Century indicates an emphasis on trade, with commercial trading c:____________having ports of call all along the Atlantic coast. d:"__________ ____" was once the name for the impressive homes that dotted the Shore Road from e:_______________to f:____________. The first bank established in 1838 know as g:__________ __________ Bank was established as an aid in part for a Staten Island Whaling Company.
Inn-keeping helped the travelling public which used the stages traversing Kings Highway (now know as) h:______________ ______,and the Richmond Turnpike (now know as) i:_____________ _______, main routes from New York to Philadelphia.
The first factory establihed in 1819, was the nationally know "Old Staten Island j:_____________ Company in West Brighton which came to be known as l:______________. Since that date, Industry has found the Island to be an ideal site, and has located here in increasing numbers.
Also in 1833, mining of iron was undertaken, much of the product being used for the manufacture of red ochre paint. Iron mines were located at the southern end of Jewett Avenue, on Iron Hill (now know as) m:_________ _____ and on Ocean Terrace.
Today (meaning 1961) Staten Island has 220 manufactories with an annual payroll of $50,000,000., 14 banking institutions and 21 branches, 4 efficient utilities such as telephone, gas, and electric companies, municipal services of the City of New York, 2145 retail and 125 wholesale places of business: Modern transportation by n:_________ and o:________and p:________: bridges to New Jersey, and a GIANT bridge under construction over the Narrows, named The q:___________ ___________: 900 miles of streets; real estate with an assessed valuation of $546,858,391.00; 59,911 dewlling units and a great newspaper The r:___________ ___________ ___________establised in 1886 as a weekly having today (1961) a circulation of 45,592.
