1. The golf hole at Silver Lake with a drinking water spring?
In front of the 17th tee there was (is?) a bubbling spring in the ground that the Park department encased in a wide pipe so you could scoop water out of it with a cup (or your hand). It was the best water I ever tasted on SI!
2. Native born SI golfer who is currently playing on the PGA tour?
Bill Britton is the SI golfer on the tour. He belonged to a collective group of kids that lived near to Silver Lake known as the "fence jumpers", because they were always sneaking onto the golf course and playing on the cuff. They knew all the woods paths, holes in the fences and hiding spots, and so never got caught by the ranger. While most kids found golf a little boring, Billy Britton seemed to have dedicated his entire childhood to it. I remember driving through Silver Lake on a cold, nasty winter's day and seeing a little 10year old figure with a golf bag as tall as he was practicing putting on the 6th green in the snow!
3. What golf driving range had moving targets, and what were the targets? The golf range was out by the Drive-in theater and SI airport. It was operated by "Pickles" Sorge, whose son Eddie later became the pro at Silver Lake. The targets were airplanes landing and taking off on a runway about 200 yards from the tees. A really hazardous situation.. how long this state of affairs continued, I'm not sure. Don't know whether this was a temporary runway or it was just before the airport closed down.
4. What did SI golfers call golfers from Brooklyn? Brooklyn golfers were called "Dykers" after their home course Dyker Beach. It seemed that once riding carts were introduced on SI, they came over in droves...before that the hilly SI courses intimidated them.
5. What golf course on SI has the longest hole? What number hole?
Richmond County Club had (has?) the longest hole. It is a long par 5
that parallels the woods and has a trestle bridge to carry you over
part of the fairway. I think it is the 4th hole, but am not sure,
only having played there once.
