Question #1...Charlie & tc got the answer to question #1 right, it
was Jack's Pond.
Question #2...The answer was Dr. Thelma Shake. She lived at 3888
Amboy Rd and the rear of that address used to overlook Jack's Pond.
When she wanted to call her kids home, she'd lean out a back window
and blow a police whistle. The kid had to yell "Coming!" at the top
of his lungs and hurry home. The other kids figured this out and
after a few times, her whistle resulted in a chorus of "Coming!" yells
and a lot of laughter.
Question #3... Charlie got the answer to that one correct, the device
I was thinking of was a "Strap Torpedo." It was a block of black
powder about an inch square wrapped in heavy waxed paper with a lead
strap attached. It never occured to me to hit one with a hammer
though, Charlie. Oww!
Questions #4 & 5 I won't answer yet. See if anyone else knows.
Question #6... was correctly answered by tc. I saw one laying it's
eggs in the valley between Jack's Pond and Amboy Rd one time. We
slipped a cut off section of 55gal drum over it to capture it, and
there wasn't 1/4" of space between the outer edge of the shell and
the inside of the drum. We were going to kill it and make turtle soup
of it but decided to let it go.
