SubTitle: School

1) What happened during the first day of school to every freshman student at Tottenville High School? Memories of variations invited.
Ans: Jeez TJ you're getting worse than me re: multiple postings. I'm learning tho. Anser to question one was more than just lipstick when I went to Old THS "when it was in Tottenville." Upperclassmen would carry onions and make freshmen take a big juicy bite. They covered more than your face with lipstick; my parents freaked when all my new school clothes were initiated along with me.
2) Wagner College used to make their freshmen wear these for a prescribed period
during freshman year; what and what is history if anyone knows? Ans. Dan got it right as usual. Do you have a private library or are you just smart? It was beanies for Wagner. And an interesting note. Back in '68/'69, women students could not attend classes in pants let along jeans. Only a skirt or dress was permitted. 3) The ferryboats used to carry a group of high school students to NY every school day to attend a special vocational school; they could be recognized by their large black
portfolio cases and tendencies to work on projects on the ferry, before going on to the
SIRT. What was the school they were attending during the 60's, and what school has
replaced its "fame?" Ans: The High School of Art & Design; up around 59th st. in Manhattan. Students studied commercial and fine art, photography, lithography, printmaking, and more. The school's principal at that time was a commercial artist and most students went on to enter Pratt, Visual Arts, or Rhode Island School of Design. Just around 1970, it changed principals and started to go downhill. Hear its pretty "nothing" now as schools go and that a new New York high school has taken up the curriculum. A&D at one time educated some of the most promising young visual artists from all NYC. If anyone knows where the crown passed to, let me know.
